HDMI 2.1

There are different HDMI standards because the requirements and technologies for the transmission of audio and video signals have evolved over time. Find out what improvements the HDMI 2.1 standard brings compared to the older versions.

Gaming, 4K streaming and high-resolution audio

HDMI 2.1 is the latest standard for High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) connection technology, offering a number of improvements and new features over older versions. Developed to meet the ever-increasing demands for high-definition audio and video transmission, HDMI 2.1 offers a wide range of benefits for the end user:

HDMI 2.1 supports a maximum bandwidth of 48 Gbit/s, compared to 18 Gbit/s with HDMI 2.0. This significant increase enables the transmission of 4K and even 8K content at higher frame rates and with deeper colour contrasts. Content with resolutions of up to 10K can be transmitted at 120 Hz. VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) support is also new. This enables dynamic adjustment of the refresh rate to ensure a smoother image display and a reduction in stuttering and tearing effects in games and videos.

With eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel), transmission of high-resolution audio formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X via HDMI is achieved, resulting in improved sound quality and a more immersive audio experience. Quick Media Switching (QMS) significantly reduces the delay when switching between different audio and video sources, resulting in a more seamless and responsive user experience.

HDMI 2.1 is particularly suitable for applications that require high-resolution video and audio transmission, such as gaming and home cinema, but also professional environments such as in film production or in medical areas.

The advantages at a glance:

  • Higher bandwidth (up to 48 Gbps)
  • Higher resolutions and refresh rates: (8K@60 Hz, 4K@120 Hz)
  • Higher colour depth (14 /16 bit)
  • Variable refresh rate (VRR) reduces jerks and tearing
  • Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) delivers excellent sound quality
  • Quick Media Switching (QMS) for uninterrupted switching between audio and video sources
  • Quick Frame Transport (QFT) for low latency
